Tax residency & return types

No. Refugee status is not a separate federal income-tax filing status. A preparer considers the applicable residency tests, presence history and residency starting date, including the arrival year. Do not assume refugee status creates the student excluded-day exception or makes someone a full-year resident. Bring status and travel records only through Keystone when requested. We offer preparation within an agreed e-filing scope, not immigration advice or benefits eligibility advice.

Tax residency & return types

Naturalized citizens generally follow the same federal income-tax rules as other U.S. citizens, including worldwide-income reporting when a return is required. Being born abroad or having foreign accounts does not by itself make a citizen a nonresident filer. A naturalization year or earlier residency transition may require additional facts; do not automatically assume a dual-status return or a special exemption. Foreign income and information reporting need separate scope review and may be outside our service.

Work visas, students & OPT

No. A business-visitor visa is not the same as owning a business or earning Schedule C income. Tax residency, income source and actual activity determine the preparation questions. Visa labels alone do not select Form 1040, Form 1040-NR or a corporate return. Reporting income does not establish immigration work authorization. Nonresident business income, business entities and treaty claims need their own scope review; we do not give immigration or work-permission advice.

Work visas, students & OPT

That is outside our e-filing-only service. IRS guidance says that when Form 8843 is required and no income-tax return is required, the form is mailed as instructed. We do not print or mail forms, and do not create an unnecessary income-tax return simply to attach it. When a genuine income-tax return is required, any accompanying Form 8843 and software e-file support still need professional confirmation. The $129 straightforward 1040-NR package is not a promise to handle every student form or treaty situation.

Our service, rates & privacy

No. Fees are based on the return, forms, records and agreed preparation work—not nationality, birthplace or immigration category. Our online, shared-services model supports very competitive rates with professional review. A straightforward resident return and a straightforward 1040-NR have different published packages. Residency elections, dual-status periods, treaty claims and foreign reporting require review because of the tax work involved, not because of who you are. All backgrounds remain welcome.

Our service, rates & privacy

Yes. We welcome individuals, families and small businesses from every background. We assess the tax facts, records and preparation work involved—not nationality, birthplace or citizenship. Our focused service covers simple to reasonably complex returns with complete records and an agreed scope. Acceptance depends on whether our professional preparation process can properly complete and electronically file the work.

Our scope can include W-2 wages, bank interest, family returns, retirement, organized Schedule C income, itemized deductions, investment sales supported by complete broker statements, rentals with income, expense and depreciation records, and existing tax-ready S corporations. Not all qualify for the $99 base price: the calculator applies the approved package and add-ons. Specialized transactions, unresolved tax positions or incomplete records need review, not an automatic promise of acceptance. All accepted returns must be eligible for electronic filing.

The starting package covers eligible individual or joint federal and New Jersey return preparation within the agreed scope. Your final quote depends on the answers in the calculator and intake. Additional business activity, extra states or other selected work can change the fee or require review. It is not a refund estimate, tax payment or promise that every return qualifies. Optional bank-product costs are separate.

Everyday filing, records & corrections

Gather every employer W-2, other relevant income forms, the prior return and records supporting any applicable deductions or credits. A wage earner can still have other reportable income or special circumstances, so answer intake fully. This website accepts categories and counts only; identifying details, actual amounts and documents belong in the separate Keystone process.

Families, spouses & retirement

Ordinary retirement-income returns with complete forms can be a good fit. Gather relevant Forms 1099-R, SSA-1099 and any interest, dividend or other income statements. Retirement does not automatically make income tax-free or remove a filing requirement. Unusual distributions, unresolved basis, rollovers or other complications may require review before we accept the work.

Families, spouses & retirement

Yes, common family returns can fit our service. Filing status, dependent eligibility and credits depend on the actual facts, not simply who paid an expense or who claimed someone last year. Shared custody, disputed claims and other unusual situations need additional review. Provide identifying family details only through Keystone, not this website.

Contractors & business owners

A contractor return should have complete income records, summarized business expenses and supporting documentation ready for preparation. Keep records of all business income, not just amounts shown on a 1099, plus relevant expenses and estimated payments. We do not provide bookkeeping, records cleanup or payroll; a separate provider referral is possible. Entity-choice planning is not offered. Specialized transactions need review before acceptance.

Everyday filing, records & corrections

Yes. Our focused preparation process relies on complete income forms and organized supporting records. Business clients need reconciled, tax-ready summaries rather than an unsorted collection of receipts. Intake can flag missing items, but it does not repair the books or authorize extra work. Additional preparation needs a separately agreed scope and fee; some situations may be outside our service.

Complex crypto or stock compensation, specialized international reporting, treaty positions, unresolved residency elections, business restructurings and ownership changes need separate scope review. Prior-year and amended returns require review of both preparation scope and e-file availability. A calculator review result is not an engagement or acceptance; we may decline or recommend a specialist. Bookkeeping, payroll, advisory work, debt resolution, representation and paper filing are not offered. Bookkeeping and payroll referrals are separate services from separate providers.

Tax Service NJ is an intake, tax preparation and electronic-filing service, not a CPA firm, tax advisory practice or tax-debt resolution company. Federal IRS rules do not generally require someone to be a CPA or enrolled agent simply to own or operate a tax preparation business. That does not remove paid-preparer PTIN requirements, applicable e-file authorization, or state and local requirements. Our service policy is that your return will be reviewed before filing by a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or an IRS-enrolled agent (EA). The reviewer’s individual credential is separate from the credentials of the owner or intake staff.

Our service, rates & privacy

Tax Service NJ handles lead intake and coordination. Professional accountants working through our Keystone preparation arrangement finalize returns using the records supplied through secure onboarding. A CPA or IRS-enrolled agent will review your return before filing. The individual with primary responsibility for the overall accuracy of preparation must sign as the paid preparer under the applicable rules; a reviewer’s involvement does not automatically decide who must sign. Other people doing substantive paid preparation generally need their own valid PTIN, even if they do not sign. Clerical intake is different from making tax-law determinations. You review the completed return and provide the required e-file authorization before transmission. We do not print or mail paper returns.

Our service, rates & privacy

We sell focused return preparation, review and filing—not ongoing tax advice or paid advisory consultations. Full-service engagements can include separately priced planning and consultation work; fees vary by professional and scope, not just by CPA or EA status. Our shared-services model supports very competitive rates. It does not bundle advisory services or charge a separate consultation fee for routine clarifications needed to complete your agreed return. Live Q&A and phone availability remain limited. Extra return-preparation work needs a separate scope and your approval.

No. Tax Service NJ provides intake, tax return preparation, professional review and filing within the agreed scope. We are not a tax advisory practice and do not offer ongoing tax planning, financial or investment advice, entity-structuring consultations or legal advice. Necessary questions and tax-law determinations for an accurate return remain part of the preparation process; “preparation only” does not waive required care or preparer responsibilities. If you need a broader advisory relationship, engage an appropriate professional separately.

No. Tax Service NJ is not a tax-debt resolution or tax representation company. We do not negotiate settlements, offers in compromise or payment plans, handle collection disputes, provide audit defense or promise penalty removal. CPA or EA review of your return does not include an engagement for representation, even though those credentials can carry IRS representation rights. We may identify a missing or amended return that needs separate preparation, but notices and debt disputes should go to an appropriately qualified professional. Do not ignore an agency deadline while seeking help.

No. We are based in Monroe Township, New Jersey but operate online, without a dedicated physical retail location or full-time in-house staff. Our shared-services preparation model and structured intake reduce overhead so we can offer very competitive rates while retaining professional review. There are no retail walk-ins or in-person appointments; live Q&A and phone availability are limited.

No. We do not provide bookkeeping, records cleanup or payroll services, even as an add-on. We can refer you to a separate provider. Any referral engagement, fees, timing and data sharing must be agreed separately; a referral is not a completed service or permission to share tax information. Your business records must be reconciled and tax-ready before we can finalize a fixed preparation scope. Asking about existing payroll or requesting payroll reports is for income-tax preparation only, not an offer to run payroll or file payroll returns.

Our service, rates & privacy

No. Tax Service NJ is exclusively an e-filing service. We do not print, assemble or mail paper returns, or manage handwritten-signature paper filing. You still must review the completed return and complete the applicable e-file authorization through secure onboarding. Electronic filing is not signature-free; any electronic-signature option depends on the applicable form, identity checks and provider requirements. Filing eligibility must be verified before transmission. Keep your final return, authorization and acceptance records.

A rejected submission is not an accepted filing. The professional must review the reason and determine whether an accurate electronic correction or resubmission is possible. If e-filing is unavailable for the return, form, year or facts—or a rejection cannot be resolved—we do not switch to printing or mailing. You may need another provider or a self-managed filing process. Do not assume a filing deadline is extended by a rejection. A quote or intake submission does not establish e-file eligibility, acceptance or timely filing; any change to the agreed service must be discussed before further work.

ITINs, SSNs & identity records

An existing ITIN does not automatically prevent e-filing or make you a nonresident. We need to confirm that it is usable, the return is supported and your identity and tax facts can be verified through Keystone. A valid ITIN is not a promise of any particular credit or refund. New ITIN applications, renewals and paper-filing work are outside the standard e-filing service.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

ITINs, SSNs & identity records

IRS Form W-7 instructions state that you cannot e-file a return using an ITIN in the calendar year it is assigned; e-filing can start in following calendar years. This is the assignment calendar year, not simply the tax year printed on the return. Do not assume receiving an ITIN immediately makes a pending return eligible for our e-filing-only service. A different filing process or provider may be needed.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

ITINs, SSNs & identity records

IRS instructions say an ITIN not included on a U.S. federal tax return for three consecutive tax years expires on December 31 of the third year. Other expiration history can also matter. Renewal is generally needed before using an expired ITIN on a federal income-tax return; use only on third-party information returns does not itself require renewal. Check the official rules rather than judging validity from the card or notice alone.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

ITINs, SSNs & identity records

No. The ITIN process is for people with a federal tax purpose who are not eligible for an SSN. Refugee, student, visa or employment circumstances can affect SSN eligibility, so check with the Social Security Administration rather than applying for both numbers as alternatives. An ITIN is not a way to bypass an SSN application. We do not determine immigration benefits or issue either number.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

ITINs, SSNs & identity records

An ITIN requires an actual federal tax purpose. The IRS says a return with all zero entries generally does not establish one. A qualifying exception to attaching a return must meet its own documentation rules. Do not invent income, dependents or a filing obligation to obtain a number, and do not confuse an ITIN with general-purpose identification.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

ITINs, SSNs & identity records

Not necessarily. IRS instructions generally require original documents or copies certified by the original issuing agency, subject to specific acceptance-agent and other rules. An ordinary scan or notarized photocopy is not automatically equivalent. Some dependents need additional proof of U.S. residency. We are not claiming acceptance-agent status; use the official IRS, Taxpayer Assistance Center or authorized acceptance-agent process.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

ITINs, SSNs & identity records

No. A missing number does not generally suspend the applicable tax-payment deadline. IRS instructions explain how to make an estimated payment or request an extension when an ITIN is to be requested. Do not send Form W-7 with an estimated-payment voucher or extension request. A payment, an extension and an ITIN application are different actions; this website performs none of them automatically.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

ITINs, SSNs & identity records

Tell the preparer through Keystone before filing. Reconcile the name linked to your SSN or ITIN, name changes, mailing address, prior returns and any later SSN assignment. A mismatch can cause rejection or correspondence. Do not alter identity facts merely to make software accept a return, and do not post old and new identity numbers in FAQ search or intake.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Credits, dependents & health coverage

No. The federal earned income credit requires a qualifying SSN for you, your spouse on a joint return and any child used for the child-based credit, within the required timing rules. An ITIN does not substitute. A child without a qualifying SSN cannot be used for the child-based amount, although a taxpayer may qualify under the separate self-only rules if all their conditions are met. Other credits use different tests.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Credits, dependents & health coverage

For 2025, the child tax credit and additional child tax credit require the taxpayer to have a qualifying SSN valid for employment and issued before the return due date, including extensions. On a joint return, one spouse must meet the valid-SSN requirement; the other must have an SSN or ITIN issued by the required deadline. Each qualifying child also needs the required valid SSN. Residency, age, support, income and other tests still apply.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Credits, dependents & health coverage

Not merely because the child has U.S. citizenship or an SSN. Under the 2025 taxpayer-SSN requirement, a joint return needs at least one spouse with the required valid SSN. Two ITIN-only filers do not meet that condition for the child tax credit or additional child tax credit. Other-dependent credit eligibility is a separate question under its own identification and dependency rules; no benefit is automatic.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Credits, dependents & health coverage

Possibly. For 2025, the credit for other dependents has its own taxpayer/dependent identification, citizenship or residency, dependency and income conditions. A qualifying dependent may use an eligible SSN, ITIN or ATIN under the applicable deadline rules. It is not a refundable replacement for every child tax credit that is unavailable, and support sent to relatives abroad does not alone establish eligibility.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Credits, dependents & health coverage

No. Several credits have identification-number issuance deadlines tied to the original return due date, including permitted extensions. A later SSN or ITIN does not automatically fix an earlier-year failure. Some timely ITIN applications have special deemed-issuance treatment for particular benefits. The result depends on the credit and filing year, not simply whether the IRS issued a number eventually.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Credits, dependents & health coverage

They may qualify when every applicable requirement is satisfied, but refugee status alone neither grants nor disqualifies a tax credit. Check the filing year, tax-residency period, valid tax numbers, U.S. residence, family facts, earned income and the specific credit. An arrival-year nonresident period can affect earned income credit eligibility. Child credits and state benefits have different rules.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Credits, dependents & health coverage

A person who is nonresident for any part of the year generally cannot claim the earned income credit under the ordinary rule. A qualifying joint resident election with an eligible spouse can change that analysis, but brings worldwide-income consequences and does not remove SSN or other EIC requirements. We do not make an election automatically to produce a credit.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Credits, dependents & health coverage

No. Form 1098-T is a reporting document, not a credit approval. Check tax residency, eligible expenses, scholarships, the student’s academic history, dependency and each credit’s rules. A nonresident generally cannot claim education credits unless a qualifying resident election applies. A student’s treaty standard-deduction exception is not an education-credit exception. Do not claim expenses already covered by tax-free assistance.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

New Jersey & multi-state filing

Not necessarily. New Jersey has a separate resident Child Tax Credit with its own child-age, income, dependency and state-return rules. The federal SSN/ITIN outcome should not simply be copied into the state calculation. Conversely, a state credit does not establish a federal entitlement. Check the New Jersey instructions for your filing year rather than assuming equal amounts or eligibility.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Credits, dependents & health coverage

Provide every Marketplace Form 1095-A through Keystone, including corrected versions. Advance premium tax credits may need reconciliation on Form 8962, even when income or household members changed. Marriage, separate filing, mixed tax households and an arrival year can complicate the result. Do not omit the form because insurance seemed free or assume it is the same as employer coverage.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Tax residency & return types

Collect income forms, prior foreign/U.S. returns if relevant, entry/exit history, status-change records, spouse/dependent information, tax-number notices and tax payments. A first U.S. return does not necessarily mean a full-year resident return. Income earned before and after your residency starting date may need different treatment. Share documents and exact dates only through Keystone; the public intake asks categories and counts.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Tax residency & return types

Do not assume these immigration categories produce identical tax treatment or special tax exemptions. Apply the federal residency rules to the actual presence and status facts, and review any qualifying excluded-day rule separately. A pending immigration application is not itself a tax-residency election. Credits, work authorization and public-benefit eligibility are separate issues; immigration questions belong with an attorney or accredited representative.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Tax residency & return types

No. Naturalization does not reset the calendar tax year, erase earlier income or cancel existing filing obligations. Many new citizens were already U.S. tax residents as green card holders. A genuine residency transition still needs analysis; citizenship acquired during the year is not by itself permission to disregard the earlier period or claim a second standard deduction.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Work visas, students & OPT

No. Analyze each person’s own residency, presence, applicable derivative-status rules and income. Some qualifying student/exchange-visitor family members may exclude days, while many other dependent visa categories do not receive that exception. A spouse can have a different tax-residency period from the principal visa holder. Filing jointly is a separate question, not an automatic consequence of the visa relationship.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Work visas, students & OPT

Possibly. A separate income-tax return depends on the person’s income and other filing requirements; being listed as a dependent does not always replace it. A qualifying person excluding days may also need their own Form 8843 even without income. We do not handle standalone mailed Forms 8843. Do not create income or file a joint return merely to avoid a separate form.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Work visas, students & OPT

Not automatically. Separate days that qualify for exclusion from days that count, include relevant prior years, and apply residency starting-date rules. Approval, entry and change-of-status effective dates may differ. Meeting substantial presence can still leave an earlier nonresident period. First-year or spouse elections require separate analysis and are not selected by this website.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Work visas, students & OPT

No. Employment authorization, worker classification, tax residency and income source are separate analyses. A W-2 or 1099 label does not establish that the payer classified the work correctly. A nonresident’s business income and possible self-employment or treaty issues need specialist review rather than an ordinary resident Schedule C quote. We do not advise whether an activity is permitted by immigration law.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Work visas, students & OPT

They can. The student limits use calendar-year and prior exempt-status rules, not one fresh five-year allowance per degree, school or visa document. A short qualifying period in a calendar year can matter. Previous teacher/trainee status and mixed histories may change the analysis. Gather all relevant prior F/J/M/Q history rather than only your latest I-20.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Work visas, students & OPT

No. The ordinary student excluded-day period and the residency test are different rules. After the usual limit, days may count, but the substantial presence test, starting date and any supported continued-exclusion exception still need review. Neither “always nonresident while studying” nor “always full-year resident in year six” is a safe shortcut.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Work visas, students & OPT

Tell the preparer rather than assuming that no income meant no obligation. A missing or late statement can affect excluded-day treatment unless an applicable exception is established. The correct response depends on the year and facts; do not backdate documents or simply repeat the prior return’s residency label. Prior-year corrections and any mailed forms are not included in the standard current-year e-filing package.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Treaties & double taxation

The U.S.–India treaty can permit the standard deduction for qualifying students or business apprentices meeting its conditions. It is not available to every Indian passport holder or every worker from India. Confirm treaty residency, qualifying purpose, applicable year and the return instructions. This exception does not automatically authorize education credits, joint filing or every benefit allowed on a resident return.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Treaties & double taxation

No. U.S. treaty benefits vary by country, income category, qualifying residence, purpose and duration. Some countries or payments have no applicable exemption, and limits or saving-clause exceptions can differ. Nationality alone is not eligibility. Use the actual treaty and protocols for the filing year, not a benefit another student received or a social-media list.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Treaties & double taxation

These are payer/withholding certifications, not interchangeable annual tax returns. Form 8233 is used for certain nonresident personal-service treaty withholding claims. Form W-8BEN generally documents a foreign individual’s status and eligible treaty claims for covered payments; compensation has special rules. Form W-9 generally documents a U.S. person’s taxpayer information. A residency change may require updating the payer’s records.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Treaties & double taxation

A payer’s withholding decision does not replace the return analysis. Reconcile all W-2 and 1042-S amounts, taxable and exempt categories, withholding, treaty limits and required disclosures. A benefit omitted by payroll may sometimes be claimed on a proper return, while an incorrectly applied benefit may need correction. Neither zero withholding nor a large refund proves the treaty treatment is correct.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Work visas, students & OPT

No. A qualified scholarship for eligible tuition/materials, a qualifying tuition reduction, service compensation and funding for living expenses can receive different treatment. Degree status, employment conditions, residency and treaty provisions matter. The word “stipend” or a university’s payment code is not enough. Provide the award letter, student-account ledger and all reporting forms through Keystone.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Everyday filing, records & corrections

Not necessarily. Certain qualifying bank-deposit interest and portfolio interest can be excluded for nonresidents, subject to the applicable conditions and connection with a U.S. trade or business. This is different from rules for U.S. residents and from stock dividends or gains. A Form 1099 or 1042-S is evidence to reconcile, not a substitute for classifying the income correctly.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Everyday filing, records & corrections

No. Nonresident capital-gain rules have special conditions, including a separate actual-presence rule in some cases, sourcing and effectively connected income. Days excluded for the substantial presence residency test are not automatically ignored for every other tax rule. U.S. real estate and business-connected gains have additional treatment. Brokerage statements alone do not settle the analysis.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Refunds & bank products

No. Those events do not create a refund by themselves. A refund generally results from payments/withholding exceeding the final liability or an allowed refundable credit. Eligibility depends on the filing year and facts. Do not report invented wages, purchase dependent claims or allow someone to promise a guaranteed “newcomer refund.” Our calculator quotes preparation fees, not refunds.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Preparer checks & secure handoff

The website handoff identifies the tax year, selected return, non-identifying answers, bank-product preference, review reasons and document checklist. It is a starting point—not a verified tax file. Through Keystone, the professional must obtain identity/contact details, supporting forms, actual income and expense amounts, residency evidence, required consents and authorizations. A saved reference does not establish that those records were received.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Preparer checks & secure handoff

For each relevant person, distinguish citizenship, the green card test, countable presence, excluded-day eligibility, starting/ending dates, treaty positions and elections. Then evaluate federal and state residency separately. An ITIN, SSN, visa name, W-2, U.S. mailing address or software default is not a complete residency determination. Keep the evidence and calculations in the secure preparation file.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Preparer checks & secure handoff

Reconcile I-94 history against passport entries, travel records and the client’s evidence rather than entering a convenient total. Presence counting generally includes parts of days, with specific exceptions that must be tested. Excluded days for one residency rule do not establish exclusion under every other tax provision. If material dates remain uncertain, the return type and fixed scope are not ready.

Different nonresident income categories can have different rates, deductions, withholding and schedules. Effectively connected income is not interchangeable with U.S.-source fixed or determinable annual or periodical income, commonly called FDAP. Some income may qualify for a statutory or treaty exclusion. Classify the payment and its source before applying a rate or assuming all income belongs on ordinary wage lines.

Schedule OI asks additional residency, presence, treaty and other information relevant to a nonresident return. These are substantive answers, not optional placeholders to make software validate. They must agree with the income treatment, supporting forms and actual history. A prior preparer’s answers should be reviewed rather than copied automatically.

Depending on the facts, examples include Forms 8843, 8840, 8833, 1116, 8938, 8621, 3520, 5471 or 5472 and a separate FinCEN FBAR. They address different obligations and are not a universal filing bundle. Some have separate deadlines, filing methods or severe consequences for omission. Mentioning them here does not mean Tax Service NJ offers or includes them.

The preparer must resolve incomplete, inconsistent or implausible facts rather than rely on a checkbox alone. Paid-preparer due-diligence rules apply to specified credits and head-of-household claims, including Form 8867, required computations, inquiries and recordkeeping. Limited live support does not remove these duties. Routine clarifications for the agreed preparation are included; additional work needs separate scope approval.

Depending on the claim, the professional may need relationship evidence, residence history, support and household-cost records, school/daycare information, custody documents or other reliable records. Overseas residence and multiple potential claimants need extra care. No single document proves every credit’s requirements, and claiming someone last year does not automatically establish this year’s entitlement.

An IP PIN can be required to process a return correctly and is different from the electronic-signature PIN or prior-year AGI. Use the applicable current IRS-issued IP PIN and verify who needs one. Do not enter it in FAQ search, email it casually or put it in this public intake. Retrieve or resolve it through the official IRS process and supply it securely when requested.

No. Never invent a prior-year amount or copy someone else’s information. Signature authentication differs between self-filed software and returns handled by an electronic return originator. The preparer must use the applicable signing and identity process for your situation. A missing prior return is a fact to explain, not permission to guess at identity-verification answers.

No. Accepting a preparation price, including optional filing-status screening, authorizing e-filing, choosing bank-product interest and making a residency election are separate actions. An election may affect worldwide income, both spouses and later years, with specific statement/signature requirements. None is made simply by using the calculator or checking the intake confirmations.

Preparer checks & secure handoff

Do not assume that. The required return/statement combination, attachments, tax year and provider support must all be checked. The fact that software can calculate a return does not establish that it can electronically file that exact package. If the correct filing needs paper or an unsupported attachment, our e-filing-only service is not the appropriate filing process.

No. The calculator currently supports tax year 2025 only, and any numerical or year-specific examples must be read for that year. Credit rules, identification requirements, thresholds, forms and e-file availability can change. Older and later-year returns need a separate scope decision. A general FAQ is not a current-year software ruleset or a substitute for the applicable instructions.

Identify the return and separate-form deadlines, whether a valid extension or relief applies, and any unpaid tax. Filing late and paying late are different issues. Do not assume the website intake reserves a timely filing, creates an extension or stops penalties. Prior-year/late work still requires acceptance and e-file eligibility; tax-debt resolution and penalty representation are not offered here.

No single label answers every reporting question. FBAR, Form 8938 and income-tax treaty rules use their own definitions, exceptions and treatment of elections or dual-resident positions. Do not infer that a Form 1040-NR filing or treaty tie-breaker eliminates every U.S. information-reporting duty. Cross-border reporting needs its own professional assessment.

Tell the preparer promptly through the agreed secure process. Before filing, reconcile the correction with amounts already entered; do not add both versions as separate income automatically. The provider must confirm the taxpayer, identification type, return form, refund, product availability and any underwriting requirements. Existing ITIN use or Form 1040-NR does not establish eligibility. Explain separate fees, loan terms and repayment obligations before any application or agreement. Keep the final return, required authorization and the separate acceptance acknowledgments for each transmitted return. Refunds & bank products

Use the official IRS refund-status tool for federal processing and the applicable state’s tool for a state refund. Exact refund and identity details belong only in the official tool or secure provider process, not this website. Verification, withholding reviews, credit rules and other issues can delay a refund. A refund advance is a separate loan; it does not make the IRS release the refund earlier.

No. Tax-return information can remain confidential even without names in a summary, especially once matched to a client. Required engagement, offshore-disclosure consent and other sharing permissions must be handled separately under applicable law. Do not assume a website checkbox permits every disclosure. Refunds & bank products

Yes, an optional refund transfer through a participating bank can deduct authorized preparation fees and applicable bank-product charges from an eligible refund. It is not a loan and does not speed up the IRS. Preparation quotes do not include optional bank-product charges. All applicable fees and terms must be disclosed before you separately agree. You can instead pay preparation fees directly and receive your refund through ordinary IRS options.

Refunds & bank products

We offer access to refund advances through participating bank providers, subject to eligibility, approval and availability. An advance is a loan based on an anticipated eligible refund, not an early IRS refund. The bank determines approval, amount, funding time and terms. Any applicable fees, interest/APR and repayment obligations are disclosed before applying or accepting. No advance amount, approval, zero-interest rate or funding date is promised on this site. Availability for nonresident or other specific returns must be confirmed.

No. Your rules-based quote covers tax preparation and the selected tax scope only, with our preparation and software costs bundled into the price. It excludes optional bank-product fees and loan costs. Accepting it does not apply for a loan, authorize a refund transfer or give permission to deduct charges. Bank applications and identity verification happen separately through the approved provider process, not this website.

Our service, rates & privacy

We welcome individuals, families, contractors and small-business owners from every background. Our scope is simple to reasonably complex returns with organized records: wages, retirement, families, Schedule C income, itemized deductions, supported investment sales, rental properties and tax-ready existing businesses. Fees depend on the work, not nationality or citizenship. Eligible individual and joint returns start at $99. Specialized issues need review and may be declined. We provide electronic filing only.

Our service, rates & privacy

Our focused service offering and online, shared-services model reduce overhead—not professional care. We have no dedicated retail location or full-time in-house staff. Tax Service NJ handles structured intake and coordination; professional accountants through our Keystone preparation arrangement finalize returns, with CPA or IRS-enrolled-agent review before filing. Qualified offshore assistance, where used, remains subject to required separate consent and safeguards. Rates cover the agreed preparation scope, not unlimited live Q&A, on-demand calls or ongoing tax planning. Preparer responsibilities remain unchanged.

Our service, rates & privacy

Live Q&A and phone availability are limited, not on demand, and are not an unlimited part of our focused service. We do not sell advisory consultations or tax-planning sessions. Routine clarifications needed to complete your agreed return are part of preparation, without a separate consultation fee. This site collects no contact details; preparation questions are handled after official Keystone onboarding. Extra return-preparation work requires your approval of a separate scope and price. Completing the intake does not reserve a call or guarantee a response time.

Our service, rates & privacy

Yes. We work with qualified tax preparers located outside the United States as part of our shared-services model. Offshore assistance is subject to applicable preparer-registration, confidentiality and data-protection requirements. Where taxpayer consent is required, a separate, compliant written consent must be obtained before tax return information is disclosed overseas. The guided intake and its confirmations are not offshore-disclosure consent; that consent is a separate step in official Keystone onboarding.

Our service, rates & privacy

No. Paid preparers who prepare all or a substantial portion of a federal return generally need a current IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN), subject to applicable exceptions. A PTIN is an identification and registration requirement, not a CPA license, enrolled-agent credential, IRS endorsement or guarantee of qualifications. Those professional credentials are separate. Ask about your preparer’s actual qualifications rather than assuming a credential from registration alone.

Our service, rates & privacy

Overseas disclosure of tax return information is subject to Internal Revenue Code Section 7216 and its regulations, including advance signed and dated taxpayer consent where required. Additional format, warning and recipient-identification requirements can apply. For Form 1040-series returns, Social Security numbers generally must be masked before overseas disclosure unless the specific consent and adequate-data-protection exception is satisfied. A general privacy notice is not a substitute for that consent. Do not send tax documents, SSNs or account details through this website.

Our service, rates & privacy

No. We do not use AI to prepare tax returns or calculate preparation quotes. People prepare returns using professional tax preparation software with rule-based calculations, and our website’s pricing calculator uses a fixed set of pricing rules. We do not rely on a chatbot or generative AI to decide what goes on your return.

Our service, rates & privacy

We do not make that claim. Our no-AI preparation policy is our own service choice. The IRS requires software used to prepare electronic returns to meet its Modernized e-File Assurance Testing requirements, including specified calculation and electronic-format checks. Those requirements are not a blanket statement that the IRS bans every use of AI.

For an eligible scenario, finish the guided intake and accept the final scope and terms to receive an issued, numbered fixed preparation quote valid for 30 days. It is honored for accurate, complete answers and the selected scope. Any change in scope or price requires your approval before extra work begins. Complex scenarios are recorded for review with no fixed price. A quote is not tax due, a refund estimate, a payment or authorization to file.

Families, spouses & retirement

Generally, being married does not become “single” merely because your spouse lives abroad or has no U.S. tax number. Depending on your residency and circumstances, married filing separately, a qualifying head-of-household status or an election to file jointly may need consideration. Do not choose a status just because software will not accept the spouse’s information.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Families, spouses & retirement

A qualifying election can allow a joint federal return, but generally brings both spouses’ worldwide income into U.S. reporting and can affect treaty positions and later years. It is not automatically best because it increases an immediate refund. This website makes no election; get a qualified professional’s assessment before agreeing. Election-related preparation needs separate scope review and may be outside our service; ongoing planning is not offered.

Families, spouses & retirement

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number is for federal tax administration when a person needs a U.S. taxpayer number but is not eligible for an SSN. It does not authorize employment, change immigration status or automatically qualify someone for credits. Applying generally involves Form W-7, identity/foreign-status evidence and a return unless an exception applies. Document handling must follow the official process.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

ITINs, SSNs & identity records

No. We do not claim IRS acceptance-agent or certifying-acceptance-agent status, certify passports or guarantee issuance. ITIN applications, renewals and paper-return handling are not included in our e-filing service. Use the official IRS, Taxpayer Assistance Center or authorized acceptance-agent process. Do not upload a passport here; only the IRS can issue an ITIN, and a scan is not automatically acceptable application evidence.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Families, spouses & retirement

Use the SSN for future tax filings once assigned and follow the IRS process to combine the tax records associated with the former ITIN. Do not keep filing under both numbers. Tell the preparer so prior-year records, carryovers and credit eligibility can be reconciled. A later SSN does not automatically make every earlier-year tax benefit available.

Families, spouses & retirement

Possibly, but sending support alone is not enough. Relationship, support, income, residency/citizenship conditions, tax numbers and the particular credit’s requirements all matter. Nonresident filers face additional limits and some treaty exceptions. A dependent who qualifies for one purpose may not qualify for the child tax credit or another benefit. We need the facts before committing to a credit.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Credits, dependents & health coverage

No. For 2025, a qualifying child needs the required valid SSN for the child tax credit and additional child tax credit; an ITIN does not substitute. The taxpayer-SSN rule must also be met, with a special rule allowing one qualifying SSN filer on a joint return while the other spouse has a timely SSN or ITIN. Other-dependent credit eligibility is separate. Verify every identification, dependency and income requirement for the filing year.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Credits, dependents & health coverage

Ordinary nonresident rules generally disallow both, but the exceptions are not the same. A qualifying U.S.–India treaty student or business apprentice may receive the standard deduction; that does not create education-credit eligibility. Education credits generally require resident treatment, which can involve a qualifying resident election. Form 1098-T or tuition payments alone prove neither benefit. Treaty and election issues require professional scope review.

Overseas income & property

If you are a U.S. tax resident, worldwide income generally must be considered even when it was never transferred to the U.S. For a nonresident or a dual-status year, the income’s source and the applicable period can change the answer. The location of the bank deposit does not by itself determine whether salary is taxable.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Overseas income & property

Compensation for services is generally sourced where the work is physically performed, not simply where the employer, client or paying bank is located. Work performed from New Jersey can therefore raise U.S. federal and state tax issues even when paid overseas. Employee-versus-contractor classification, payroll obligations, work authorization and treaty rules are separate questions needing appropriate review.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Overseas income & property

A transfer of your own existing money is generally not income merely because it crosses a border. But the underlying source—salary, interest, investment gains, a gift, loan or business distribution—still matters. Taxable income and information reporting may arise independently of the transfer. Keep records showing where the funds came from rather than relying only on the wire-transfer description.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Overseas income & property

Yes. U.S. residents generally must consider taxable worldwide interest and dividends even without a Form 1099. A foreign account’s local “tax-free” label does not automatically make its earnings exempt in the U.S. Income reporting and FBAR/Form 8938 reporting are separate: a small account may generate taxable income even below an asset-reporting threshold.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Overseas income & property

For a U.S. resident, foreign rent and related expenses generally need U.S.-dollar reporting under U.S. tax rules. Local profit calculations, depreciation and taxes may not match the U.S. treatment. Foreign tax credits and asset/entity disclosures can also require review. An overseas rental is not automatically covered by the ordinary fixed-price domestic rental add-on.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Overseas income & property

Not automatically. Residency, cost basis, improvements, depreciation, currency conversion and possible principal-residence exclusion rules all matter. A sale can create different gains in two countries because the rules or exchange rates differ. Payment of foreign tax does not by itself remove U.S. reporting. Provide acquisition and sale records for a separate scope review before assuming there is no U.S. gain.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Overseas income & property

Not necessarily. A plan recognized as tax-deferred overseas may receive different U.S. treatment, and treaty provisions can be highly specific. Contributions, employer funding, investment income, distributions and information reporting each need consideration. Do not assume only withdrawals matter or that every foreign plan is a foreign trust. Identify the actual plan and country for specialist review.

Overseas income & property

Ownership can raise information-return and income-inclusion issues even without a cash distribution. Entity classification, ownership percentages, control, transactions and your U.S. tax status matter. Forms such as 5471, 8865 or 8858 may need consideration; they are not interchangeable. This is review-only international work, not something included automatically in a basic individual or S corporation package.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Overseas income & property

The appropriate method depends on the item and form. Recurring income, a one-time sale, historical cost basis and a year-end foreign-asset balance may call for different dates or permitted methods. Do not use one convenient rate for every item or simply report the foreign-currency number as dollars. Keep original-currency records and the exchange-rate source used.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Filing history & tax compliance

Generally yes under the green card test, subject to residency starting/ending rules and any properly analyzed treaty position. Living overseas or letting the physical card expire does not automatically end U.S. tax residency. Worldwide income and international reporting may therefore continue. Discuss any proposed nonresident filing with both a qualified tax professional and an immigration attorney before acting.

Filing history & tax compliance

Depending on the application and circumstances, useful records can include filed returns, IRS transcripts, payment history and documentation of arrangements for overdue taxes. USCIS evidence requirements differ by case. Gather records using the official instructions and seek immigration advice about what is required. We prepare accepted returns; we do not provide a filing-history audit, immigration-evidence assessment or citizenship application service.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Filing history & tax compliance

No. A return transcript generally summarizes information from the original filed return; an account transcript can show payments and later account activity. Different records serve different purposes, and a transcript may not show every attachment or a later amendment in the way you expect. Follow the requesting authority’s instructions and use the official IRS transcript service to obtain your own records.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Filing history & tax compliance

Do not ignore missing filings, notices or unpaid balances. Gather the affected years and account records. USCIS may require evidence of filing, an agreed payment arrangement and current payments where applicable. A payment plan is not a guarantee of immigration eligibility. Tax Service NJ can assess separately quoted missing-return preparation, but does not negotiate payment plans, resolve tax debt or represent you in notice disputes. Consult a qualified tax-resolution professional and an immigration attorney for those issues.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Filing history & tax compliance

Yes. That filing position should be checked against the green card test, any claimed treaty basis and your full history. It can have tax and potentially immigration consequences, so do not automatically repeat it or amend it without advice. We can assess tax-preparation scope; an immigration attorney should advise on permanent-residence and naturalization implications. No correction can be promised to guarantee a citizenship result.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Filing history & tax compliance

Get individualized advice before choosing a correction route. An amended return, delinquent information return, FBAR correction or an IRS compliance procedure may have different requirements and consequences. Do not quietly file a few forms and assume the issue is resolved. Penalties, eligibility, reasonable cause and potential legal concerns warrant specialist review; the basic quote does not include an international cleanup or penalty defense.

Contractors & business owners

Generally yes when the income is taxable to you. A client’s information-reporting threshold is not your personal exemption from reporting business income. Reconcile invoices, payment platforms, bank deposits and cash receipts while identifying genuine transfers and reimbursements correctly. Your residency and where services were performed still affect the analysis. Do not rely only on the total of forms received.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Contractors & business owners

Ordinary and necessary business costs may be deductible, but the actual business purpose, records and applicable limitations matter. Software, professional fees, equipment, travel and a qualifying home office can have different rules. Personal costs do not become business expenses merely because they were paid from a business account. We need categorized, reconciled records. We do not perform bookkeeping cleanup or ongoing tax advisory services; bookkeeping referrals require a separate provider engagement and fees.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Contractors & business owners

Tax is generally paid during the year through withholding or estimated payments. Business profit, investment income or pass-through income can create tax without enough withholding to cover it. Underpayment penalties may apply even when a return ultimately shows a refund. Federal and state calculations differ. An annual preparation fee is not an ongoing quarterly tax-planning engagement.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Contractors & business owners

Citizenship alone is not the deciding factor: a qualifying resident alien can generally be an eligible individual shareholder, while a nonresident alien generally cannot. Other shareholder and entity requirements also apply. A residency change or treaty position can therefore affect an S election. Verify eligibility before electing S status, issuing shares or assuming a standard S corporation package is appropriate.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Contractors & business owners

No. LLC is a state-law legal form, not a single federal tax classification. Depending on ownership and valid elections, an LLC may be disregarded, treated as a partnership or taxed as a corporation. An S election is not automatic, and some entities are outside our fixed-price packages. We confirm the return type rather than select it from “LLC” on a bank statement.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Contractors & business owners

Yes. A foreign-owned U.S. disregarded entity can have Form 5472 reporting with a pro forma Form 1120 for reportable related-party transactions. Contributions, distributions and owner transactions can matter even without sales or a profit. These requirements differ from ordinary Schedule C preparation. Foreign-owned entities need scope review; do not assume “no income” means “no filing.”

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Contractors & business owners

No. The corporation’s return and the owners’ personal returns are separate engagements and quotes. A Schedule K-1 can flow into an owner’s personal filing and requires scope review there. Our corporation preparation assumes tax-ready records. We do not perform payroll, sales-tax filings, bookkeeping cleanup or owner tax planning. Bookkeeping and payroll referrals involve another provider and separate fees, not an upgrade to our preparation package.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Contractors & business owners

Fuel sales, store sales, merchant deposits, inventory, cost of goods sold and sales-tax records can describe different parts of the business. A bank-deposit total alone may not show gross receipts or taxable profit correctly. Gather POS reports, supplier summaries, inventory records and payroll reports. Fixed pricing assumes tax-ready records for the quoted entity and location. We do not perform cleanup; bookkeeping referrals are separate. Additional locations need scope review.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Everyday filing, records & corrections

No. A calendar-year Form 1040-NR filer with wages subject to U.S. withholding generally has the fourth-month filing deadline, while certain filers without those wages generally have the sixth-month deadline. Other rules and extensions can apply. Weekends, holidays, disaster relief and separate forms can change dates. Check the instructions for your tax year instead of assuming one deadline covers every return.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Everyday filing, records & corrections

Generally no. An extension ordinarily gives extra time to file the return, not extra time to pay tax due by the applicable payment deadline. Interest and penalties can still accrue. Special overseas rules have their own conditions and do not mean everyone abroad can postpone all payments. A quote request or guided intake does not file an extension for you.

Do not rush past missing documents. W-2s, 1042-S forms, investment statements, corrected forms and foreign-income records may differ from a pay stub. Filing before the facts are complete can create an amendment and extra cost. If a document is late, discuss an appropriate extension and any payment needed rather than omitting the income.

Everyday filing, records & corrections

It may be correctable, but first establish the correct year-specific residency, filing status, income and required forms. Form 1040-X, supporting return schedules and state corrections may be needed. Refund time limits and other consequences require professional review. An amendment is not automatically accepted by our service: it needs separate scope agreement and confirmed e-file support. We do not print/mail corrections or promise a refund increase.

Everyday filing, records & corrections

Read the notice and its response deadline, keep the envelope and gather the filed return plus supporting records. A notice is not always a final assessment, and its proposed adjustment is not always correct. Verify contact details through the agency’s official website before paying or sharing information. Tax Service NJ does not provide notice-dispute representation or tax-debt resolution; seek an appropriately qualified professional promptly. A missing or amended return, if needed, is separate preparation work, not a representation engagement.

Everyday filing, records & corrections

Retention depends on the item and circumstances; there is no one short period that covers every record. Keep filed returns and support for income, credits and payments, and retain basis records for property or investments through disposition and the applicable later period. Missing returns and international reporting can involve special rules. The secure document system is not a substitute for your own retained copies.

Everyday filing, records & corrections

No. E-file acceptance generally means the submission passed initial processing checks; it is not an audit, a legal opinion or a guarantee of every credit. A return can later be reviewed or adjusted. Review your completed return before authorizing filing, and keep the signed authorization, final return and acceptance records. A website quote or intake is not that authorization.

Everyday filing, records & corrections

Yes. Filing requirements can depend on income type, business activity, residency and information-reporting obligations—not just the final balance due. Filing may also be needed to recover eligible withholding. Conversely, a desire for a refund does not create eligibility for credits you do not qualify for. Form 8843 and foreign-asset reports can have obligations separate from an income-tax return.

Refunds & bank products

No. The quote is the fee to prepare the selected return within its agreed scope. Your refund or balance due is calculated only after income, withholding, credits and other facts are verified. It can be much larger or smaller than the preparation fee. Bank-product eligibility and any separate costs are also not determined by the quote.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Refunds & bank products

Eligibility must be confirmed with the actual provider for the particular return, taxpayer and product. Do not assume Form 1040-NR, an entity return or every type of refund qualifies. Selecting interest in the calculator or intake is only a preference; it is not an application, credit decision or approval. We do not quote an advance amount, rate or funding date here.

Refunds & bank products

No. Direct payment remains an option, and selecting a bank preference does not change the quoted preparation fee. A refund transfer may pay authorized fees from an eligible refund; it is not a loan and does not speed up IRS processing. An advance is a separate bank loan subject to approval. Applicable bank charges and loan terms must be disclosed before separate agreement; they are excluded from the preparation quote, not assumed to be zero.

Tax residency & return types

For federal income tax, a resident generally reports worldwide income under rules similar to those for U.S. citizens. A nonresident generally reports U.S.-source income and income effectively connected with a U.S. trade or business, subject to exceptions and treaties. These are tax classifications, not nationality labels. Establishing the right classification comes before choosing a form, deduction or filing status.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Tax residency & return types

Generally, you need at least 31 days of U.S. presence in the current year and a weighted total of at least 183 days: all countable days this year, one-third of countable days last year, and one-sixth from the year before. Some days are excluded and exceptions can apply. We need your actual travel and status history—not simply the date you started your job.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Tax residency & return types

Yes. For example, 130 countable days this year, 120 last year and 120 the year before produce a weighted total of 190: 130 + 40 + 20. That can satisfy the substantial presence test even though this year alone is below 183 days. The current-year minimum, excluded days, residency starting date and any applicable exceptions still need review.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Tax residency & return types

No. In the substantial presence rules, “exempt” usually means certain days do not count toward the residency test. It does not automatically exempt wages, scholarships or other income from tax. A person excluding days may still have an income-tax return obligation and a separate Form 8843 filing obligation. Income exemptions and treaty benefits are different questions.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Tax residency & return types

Gather entry and exit dates, prior-year U.S. visits, visa/status documents and dates of status changes. I-94 travel history is useful, but reconcile it with passport stamps, tickets and your own records if it is incomplete. Prior student or exchange-visitor years may affect excluded-day limits even when you earned nothing then. Share these records through Keystone, not this website.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Tax residency & return types

Sometimes. The usual exception has conditions including fewer than 183 days of actual U.S. presence in the current year, a foreign tax home, a closer connection to a foreign country and restrictions related to steps toward permanent residence. Form 8840 and timely filing can matter. It is not enough merely to own a home overseas or prefer nonresident treatment; this requires individual review.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Tax residency & return types

That depends on your federal tax residency, any applicable treaty position, elections and whether you had a dual-status year. Resident individuals generally use Form 1040; nonresident individuals generally use Form 1040-NR when a return is required. An SSN, U.S. address, W-2 or employer payroll classification does not settle the issue. The wrong form can produce incorrect deductions, credits and income reporting.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Tax residency & return types

It is a year in which you are a nonresident for one part and a resident for another, commonly an arrival or departure year. Different income rules apply to the two periods, and the return form depends partly on your year-end status. Deductions and filing-status choices can be restricted. A dual-status return is not automatically covered by a standard resident or nonresident package; we review the scope first.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Tax residency & return types

Certain people who do not otherwise qualify as residents in their arrival year can elect part-year resident treatment if they meet specific presence conditions and become residents under the substantial presence test the following year. It is not an election available to every newcomer and does not automatically produce a full-year joint return. Timing, an extension and worldwide-income consequences need to be considered together.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Tax residency & return types

Not necessarily. Your residency termination date, continuing U.S. income, green card status and any applicable treaty all matter. Some departing individuals also need a sailing/departure permit unless an exception applies. Moving overseas is not a substitute for a final or continuing return analysis. Tell the preparer about future U.S. income, property, businesses and permanent-resident status before assuming the departure year is your last filing.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Work visas, students & OPT

No. Days in these statuses generally count for substantial presence, but an arrival-year worker may not yet satisfy that test. A worker with earlier U.S. visits could satisfy it sooner than expected. We consider travel, status changes and the green card test rather than assigning residency solely from the visa name. Treaty positions and dual-status years may require additional review.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Work visas, students & OPT

Qualifying students can generally exclude days from substantial presence during their first five calendar years in exempt student status, with important exceptions and prior-status rules. A partial calendar year can count as one of the five; it is not necessarily five full years from your arrival date. After that period, residency is determined under the applicable tests, and continued exclusion is not automatic.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Work visas, students & OPT

No. OPT and STEM OPT are generally part of F-1 status, and the tax-residency analysis still depends on calendar-year history and countable days. Starting a full-time job or receiving a W-2 does not by itself turn a nonresident into a resident. Income tax, payroll-tax exemptions and work authorization are separate issues that should not be mixed together.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Work visas, students & OPT

No. A J-1 student and a J-1 teacher or trainee can face different excluded-day rules and look-back limits. Prior time in F, J, M or Q status can matter. A university label such as “scholar” is not a complete tax analysis. Supply the actual program category and prior U.S. history so the right rule is applied.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Work visas, students & OPT

Yes. Qualifying students, teachers, trainees or family members excluding days may need their own Form 8843 even without a required income-tax return. A principal applicant’s filing does not cover everyone. If no income-tax return is required, IRS instructions direct standalone mailing; we do not provide that service. When a genuine return is required, attachment and e-file support must be verified before acceptance.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Work visas, students & OPT

A qualifying nonresident in the relevant status may be exempt on authorized work that carries out the purpose of that status. It is not a blanket exemption for every worker with a student visa. Residency changes, the nature of the work and separate student-employment rules can change the result. Federal income-tax withholding is separate and may still apply.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Work visas, students & OPT

First request a refund from the employer. If the full amount cannot be recovered there, an IRS claim may be available using Forms 843 and 8316 with supporting records. Those taxes are not ordinarily recovered by increasing the income-tax refund on Form 1040-NR. Keep pay statements, status evidence and employer correspondence. We do not provide payroll filings or paper refund-claim handling; use an appropriate professional or official process for that claim.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Work visas, students & OPT

No. Treatment depends on the payment, qualified education costs, degree-candidate status, services required, tax residency and possible treaty benefits. Amounts for living expenses or services may be taxable even when the award is called a scholarship. Forms W-2 and 1042-S can report different parts of the same funding arrangement, so provide both rather than treating one as a duplicate.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Work visas, students & OPT

Form 1042-S reports certain payments to foreign persons, which can include scholarship income or income covered by treaty withholding rules. A W-2 generally reports employee wages. You may need both to report income and withholding correctly; one is not automatically a correction of the other. Wait for the relevant documents and reconcile payment categories before filing.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Work visas, students & OPT

No. A tax return or an ITIN does not grant work authorization, extend a visa or resolve a status violation. Income can still have tax-reporting consequences even when there are separate immigration concerns. We handle tax preparation within the agreed scope; an immigration attorney or accredited representative should address work-permission and status questions.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Foreign accounts, assets & gifts

It is an aggregate threshold. A U.S. person can need an FBAR when the combined value of reportable foreign financial accounts exceeds $10,000 at any time during the calendar year. Keeping each account below $10,000 does not solve the issue. Who is a U.S. person, which accounts count and how balances are measured must still be checked.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Foreign accounts, assets & gifts

No. The FBAR is an information report to FinCEN, not a tax on the balance. Income earned in an account may separately belong on an income-tax return. Having no tax due or no interest does not automatically remove the reporting duty. Filing your federal income-tax return alone does not file your FBAR.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Foreign accounts, assets & gifts

They are separate reporting systems with different covered assets, definitions, thresholds and filing methods. FBAR goes separately to FinCEN; Form 8938 is generally attached to an applicable federal income-tax return. Form 8938 thresholds vary by filing status and qualifying residence abroad. Some people need both. Neither form automatically replaces the other, so we assess them independently.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Foreign accounts, assets & gifts

Yes. Financial interests in jointly held accounts and certain signature-authority arrangements can be relevant, including authority over an employer’s foreign account. The reporting rules and exceptions differ between FBAR and Form 8938. Do not divide an account balance by the number of owners and assume only your fraction counts for every purpose.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Foreign accounts, assets & gifts

Yes. Reporting can depend on accounts held and maximum values during the year, not just what remained open on December 31. An account closed before year-end may still belong in the analysis. Keep opening/closing records, statements and ownership information. A year-end balance of zero is not enough to conclude that no report is required.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Foreign accounts, assets & gifts

Directly held foreign real estate is not itself a foreign financial account for FBAR and is not itself a specified foreign financial asset on Form 8938. But related bank accounts, an entity holding the property, rental income or a sale can create separate obligations. “Not on FBAR” does not mean “irrelevant to U.S. taxes.”

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Foreign accounts, assets & gifts

Some foreign funds can be passive foreign investment companies, or PFICs, triggering Form 8621 analysis and potentially unfavorable tax or interest calculations. The fund’s legal structure and U.S. classification matter; a familiar local investment name is not enough. Do not assume a foreign broker’s gain summary is sufficient. PFIC work requires specialist scope review and is outside ordinary investment-sales fixed pricing.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Foreign accounts, assets & gifts

A genuine gift is generally different from compensation, a business payment, a loan or a trust distribution. The identity and tax status of the sender and the actual transaction matter. Even a nontaxable foreign gift can require an information return. Keep evidence of the source and purpose; do not label a payment a gift merely because it arrived from a relative.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Foreign accounts, assets & gifts

For a U.S. person, gifts or bequests exceeding $100,000 in aggregate during the year from a nonresident individual or foreign estate can require reporting, including aggregation of related donors. Purported gifts from foreign corporations or partnerships have different, annually adjusted thresholds and may be recharacterized. Foreign trusts follow additional rules. The threshold is not an automatic tax-free allowance for every foreign transfer.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Foreign accounts, assets & gifts

Yes. Cash-value policies, foreign trusts and local tax-advantaged investment arrangements can create reporting or income issues depending on their structure. Do not assume a plan is ignored because it is used for retirement, education or family savings. The preparer needs the actual contract or plan description through the secure process. We first determine the appropriate specialist and scope rather than promise every international form is included.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Treaties & double taxation

No. A treaty benefit depends on the treaty text, tax-residency conditions, income type, relevant article and limitations. Your passport alone does not establish eligibility, and a benefit for a student may not apply to an employee or business owner. We need the actual facts and the relevant tax year. Treaty positions are review-only, not automatic deductions in the quote calculator.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Treaties & double taxation

Many U.S. income-tax treaties preserve the United States’ right to tax its citizens or residents as if parts of the treaty did not exist, subject to specified exceptions. That can limit a benefit after tax residency changes. Some student, teacher or other provisions may have exceptions, but their wording matters. Never assume a treaty benefit continues unchanged after you become a resident.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Treaties & double taxation

Often yes for a U.S. tax resident. Reporting the income and claiming eligible double-tax relief are different steps. A foreign tax credit may reduce U.S. tax, but qualifying-tax rules, source rules, limits and timing apply. The credit is not always a dollar-for-dollar refund of everything paid abroad. Keep foreign assessments and proof of payment for review.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Treaties & double taxation

No. The exclusion concerns qualifying foreign earned income and requires the applicable foreign tax-home and residence or physical-presence conditions. Being a foreign citizen, receiving foreign-currency wages or working for an overseas employer is not enough. Work physically performed in the United States generally does not become foreign-source earned income because payment comes from abroad.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Treaties & double taxation

You cannot claim a foreign tax credit for tax attributable to income you exclude from U.S. gross income. Other income and tax categories may still qualify for relief, with limits. Elections, carryovers and interactions can affect more than one year. This needs a coordinated calculation—not simply checking every box described as reducing double taxation.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

Treaties & double taxation

Certain treaty-based return positions must be disclosed on Form 8833 unless an exception applies. Other treaty benefits can use different reporting or withholding forms. It is important to distinguish a withholding request, an income-tax return claim and a treaty-residency position. A correct-looking refund does not prove the required disclosure was filed.

New Jersey & multi-state filing

No. New Jersey applies its own domicile, permanent-home and physical-presence rules. A person filing federal Form 1040-NR may still need a New Jersey resident or part-year return. The reverse can also occur. We examine where you lived and worked, when you moved, and the state rules instead of copying the federal residency label.

General information, reviewed October 2026. Rules change by tax year and your facts matter; confirm against the current official source.

New Jersey & multi-state filing

New Jersey residents generally report taxable income from all sources under New Jersey law. Part-year and nonresident rules differ. Federal exclusions, deductions or treaty treatment do not always produce the same state result. Keep overseas income records even if you expect federal relief, and do not assume a federal foreign-tax credit automatically removes New Jersey tax.

New Jersey & multi-state filing

New Jersey’s credit for taxes paid to other jurisdictions does not allow a credit for income taxes paid to a foreign country or territory. This differs from the federal foreign tax credit. The distinction can matter when a New Jersey resident also owes tax overseas. A federal credit calculation is not a substitute for checking the state rules.

New Jersey & multi-state filing

Often, a New Jersey resident with New York-source wages needs a New Jersey resident return and a New York nonresident return. A New Jersey credit may be available for qualifying tax paid to another jurisdiction, subject to limits. Work locations, remote days and the other state’s sourcing rules matter. Multiple-state preparation can add fees; our calculator lists the selected states.

New Jersey & multi-state filing

You may need part-year, resident or nonresident returns in more than one state. A W-2 address or employer headquarters does not tell the whole story. Some states have special remote-work sourcing rules, and New Jersey has wage reciprocity with Pennsylvania that does not extend to every income type or every neighboring state. Provide a timeline and actual work locations before filing.

Tax residency & return types

No. Visa type alone does not determine tax residency. Residency for tax purposes depends on tests such as green card status and the number of days you were physically present in the U.S., along with exceptions that can apply to some visa categories. Bring your dates and documents and we will go through them with you.

Treaties & double taxation

Possibly, but eligibility varies. It depends on your country, the kind of income, your visa category, how long you have been in the U.S. and other facts. We review whether a treaty position is worth looking at; we cannot promise a treaty will apply.

Contractors & business owners

Often yes, but a 1099 can report several kinds of income, not just contracting. Self-employment tax may apply to business income; nonresident rules and treaty exceptions need separate review. Contract payments often have no withholding, but report any withholding actually shown on your forms. Filing thresholds and estimated-payment duties depend on the facts.
